An estimated 21,000 gallons of crude oil have leaked from a Plains All American Pipeline near Refugio State Park, along the Gaviota Coast north of Santa Barbara, California. Reportedly, an oil slick roughly 4-miles long and 50-100 yards wide extends off the coast of Refugio State Park Beach.
This is an eery reminder of Union Oil's 1969 oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara - which had significant ecological and environmental impacts on coastal Santa Barbara County.
My name is Lincoln H Pitcher. I am a graduate student in the Department of Geography at UCLA. My research focuses hydrologic and cryospheric systems and interfaces with emerging ground, air and spaceborne remote sensing and geospatial technologies. I aim to use these emerging technologies to enhance understanding of remote and logistically inaccessible places. My current research focuses on both Greenland and Arctic Alaska.
